Job Description

Our client, a safety-net hospital situated in Staten Island with a notable regional reputation, is hiring a Chair of Medicine. This leadership role offers the unique opportunity to impact a growing organization as it prepares for a promising academic partnership with institutions such as NYU, Mount Sinai, and NYC H&H. The position provides stability through a transitional period, with movement towards partnership anticipated in over a year, and the role remains secure regardless of the partnership process.

The Chair of Medicine will be responsible for setting the strategic direction of the Department of Medicine across inpatient and outpatient services. The leader will work closely with the Chief Medical Officer, hospital executives, and clinical chairs to enhance quality, patient experience, staff engagement, and program development. An essential focus will be on building a robust medical workforce through physician recruitment, retention initiatives, and leadership development. Additionally, the Chair will oversee quality metrics, informatics, and the advancement of service line strategies, including efforts to standardize practices hospital-wide.

Requirements

  • Medical degree (MD or equivalent) required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of leadership experience in academic hospital settings.
  • Proven success in physician recruitment, retention, and leadership development.
  • Strong financial acumen, ideally supported by an MBA or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through complex transformations and adversity.
  • Experience with graduate medical education (GME) programs, including oversight of residency, fellowships, and medical students. Must have managed programs with at least 160 residents, 100 medical students, and several fellows.
  • Knowledge of informatics and quality improvement methodologies.
  • Ability to build bridges across clinical departments and institutional partners.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and change management skills.
  • Impeccable credibility and staying power in an evolving, lean organizational structure.
  • Experience with GME programs and complex healthcare politics highly desirable.
  • Willingness to stay long-term and immerse in the organizational culture.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving strategic priorities given upcoming academic partnerships.

Nice to Have Skills

  • Prior experience in a hospital with multiple academic affiliations.
  • Familiarity with oncology, cardiology, and behavioral health programs
  • Experience managing or partnering with large teaching hospitals.
  • Experience managing debt or crisis situations is a plus.
  • Advanced degree such as an MBA preferred.
