Job Description

Our client, a respected non-profit teaching hospital located in an ethnically diverse neighborhood of New York City, is seeking an Associate Vice President (AVP) of Facilities and Engineering. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Facilities Management and Support Services, the AVP will be responsible for leading the Safety (Environment and Occupational) Department, Fire and Life Safety Department, and Engineering Department. This role involves guiding these departments in delivering top-notch services and special projects to ensure a safe, functional, and supportive environment for patient care and other hospital operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Strategy: Develop a comprehensive Scope of Services for all departments under your supervision. Create and implement performance metrics, analyze areas for improvement, and report to the Board of Trustees.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Work closely with executive and clinical leadership to ensure alignment with the hospital’s mission. Review and develop policies, procedures, and initiatives to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Committee Leadership: Serve as the Chairperson of the Environment of Care/Physical Environment Committee, by CEO/President appointment, to achieve the committee's objectives.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Conduct Intracycle Monitoring (ICM) and Focused Standard Assessments (FSA) with plans of correction to meet The Joint Commission's standards. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including ADA requirements, OSHA laws, and Life Safety Code.
  • Emergency Management: Lead the development of Environment of Care Management Plans, oversee fire safety programs, and implement interim life safety measures. Act on behalf of the CEO/President to address any immediate safety threats.
  • Operational Excellence: Manage the planning, testing, and maintenance of the physical plant, utilities, and infrastructure. Oversee unionized and non-union staff, as well as vendors and contractors, to ensure high standards.
  • Budget Oversight: Develop operating, capital, and personnel budgets, monitor performance, and implement cost-saving measures.
  • Training & Development: Organize training for staff and licensed independent contractors (LIC) on fire safety, emergency operating procedures, and equipment maintenance.
  • Risk Mitigation: Collaborate with Risk Management, General Counsel, and insurance providers to address safety risks and litigation matters. Conduct environmental tours to ensure compliance and survey readiness.

Requirements

  • Education: Minimum of a Master’s Degree.
  • Experience: 5+ years in a related role, preferably with clinical experience in a hospital setting.
  • Skills: Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Certification: Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS)
